So it could be that you’re reading this because you’re planning on popping the question sometime soon. The BIG question that many of us fantasize about asking (or being asked). It can be nerve-wracking and exciting all at the same time. A whole slew of emotions, really. At this point, you’ve probably already made the decision to ask this very important question. However, how to execute this is the real question. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity of photographing a number of proposals. Some are a bit more elaborate than others. The life of a wedding photographer, ya know?! Over the years I have developed some of the best wedding tips on how to plan your proposal. So that you’re not only confident and secure in your plan, but you’re able to wow your partner in your own special way.

Where Are You Wanting To Propose?

First things first, you’re going to need to determine where you’re planning on asking the question. Are you planning on asking it in your home, on a cozy night while cooking dinner? Are you planning on taking them to their favorite restaurant? Maybe your first date spot? Wherever you choose, make sure that you are picking a location that is not only meaningful but something you AND your partner are comfortable with. When planning a proposal, you want to make sure that you are thinking about how your partner would feel while you ask the BIG question. What they would want!

How BIG Do You Want To Go?

Next, you’re going to want to decide how BIG you want to go when it comes to popping the big question. While some of you may be planning some big elaborate proposal, there may be some of you that this just doesn’t fit your style. Are you wanting to incorporate big balloons and signs? Have a plan drag a banner across the sky? Hey, it’s been done! Or are you someone looking to do something a bit more casual or subdued? Flower petals leading to a candle-lit dinner in your living room? The opportunities and options are endless. Again, just make sure that you are not only choosing what you feel comfortable doing, but your partner would want.

How Public Do You Want The Proposal? Will There Be An Audience?

Thirdly, you’re going to need to know how public you’re going to want this proposal to be. Don’t get me wrong, there are many people out there who want to be the center of attention. All eyes are on them and have the largest of large proposals in front of an audience. Think proposals at a sports game on the jumbotron type big. However, not everyone may like this approach. In fact, many people may hate this kind of attention and may end up freezing once it comes time to pop the question.

The most important thing is that you are making yourself and your partner comfortable on such a beautiful and important occasion. The last thing you want is to increase the added pressure of doing something completely outside of your comfort zone. Instead, determine how private you’re wanting to have your proposal prior to actually asking the big question!

This can also apply to family as well. Many of you probably think asking at a family event, surrounded by all the people they love, might be the best option. However, that isn’t always the case. When you’re proposing to your significant other, you should have a general idea of what they are comfortable with and not comfortable with. This will save you and your partner a ton of worry – trust me.

Make Sure You Have A Backup Plan | Wedding Tips For Your Proposal

Having a solid backup plan is important in almost any circumstance. However, it’s especially important when you’re planning the perfect proposal. If you’re planning something outdoors, what happens if it rains? If you’re planning something at a restaurant, what happens when somehow your reservation is nowhere to be found? These are things that you must take into account when you’re planning on popping the question. Always have a backup plan and this will save you a ton of worry and stress, especially if things don’t go to plan the first time.

Most Importantly… Hire A Photographer

One of the most important wedding tips I can give you when it comes game time to plan your proposal is to hire a photographer! Does this make me biased? Absolutely, but with good reason! I have experienced firsthand how emotional and powerful proposals can truly be. From the endless tears to the hugs that feel like an eternity. It can pass you by and all feel like a blur, trust me it’s happened. So many couples even say that they can barely even remember what they said or looked like because they were in complete SHOCK. You want to be able to document this moment and look back on it forever. So whatever you do, hire a photographer and find someone who will work with you and your proposal ideas + plans.

Determine How Much Help You Want From Your Photographer | Wedding Tips

Like I said before, I have helped with countless amounts of proposals. Some are more sneaky and private than others. With that, comes in-depth planning on making sure that we don’t spoil the surprise for your partner. There are two options that you can go with when deciding to hire a photographer to help capture the big moment.

1.) Your Photographer Helps You Plan

With this option, your photographer can help you plan and keep things private and secret. Whether it be a sneaky “couples photoshoot” or telling your partner that you’re just going for a “walk in the park”. Your photographer can help you by giving you “cues” to help know the most optimal time to ask your partner. Your photographer will be a part of the plan and help you execute the ultimate proposal for maximum *wowness* – LOL.

2.) Your Photographer Is More Hands-Off

The other option is having your photographer be a bit more hands-off and not give as much guidance. They are there to hide, document the moment and stay out of sight. This is best if you’re not needing much help from your photographer, but still want to help capture the moment.

Remember To Stay In The Moment

It can be really easy to get caught up in the whole proposal. You are wanting to make a good impression and really wow your partner, but you tend to lose sight of what it’s like being in the moment. Don’t get so caught up in the hype of it all, and just focus on yourself and your partner. You’re taking this next step in your journey together and you should cherish every minute of this moment. Oh, and remember when you hire a photographer they get to worry about documenting these moments so that YOU can be in the moment 😉

Wedding Tips | How to Plan Your Proposal

At the end of the day, while I can give you all the wedding tips on how to plan your proposal… it’s YOUR choice. You celebrate your proposal your way and what feels the most comfortable for you and your partner. Whether that is cozied up on the couch watching movies, or out and about at an event or a picnic in the park. Whichever you choose, just remember to do it for you and your partner. Get excited, you’re going to be a fiancé!!!!!
